Goodwill Industries of Alberta is a leading non-profit social enterprise committed to inclusive employment and environmental stewardship. Goodwill’s thrift store operations power it’s mission-focused initiatives which support individuals with disabilities and barriers in securing meaningful employment.
Goodwill’s recycling initiatives include the award-winning Repair for Good program, which diverts thousands of kilograms of broken and discarded furniture from landfills annually, transforming them into unique, upcycled pieces for resale. This initiative not only extends the lifecycle of wood products but also provides hands-on carpentry and employment skills training for Albertans with disabilities, fostering meaningful employment and skill development.
At the heart of this impact is Goodwill’s Sustainability Action Plan, which has helped the organization achieve a landfill diversion rate of nearly 90% with a goal of becoming a waste-free operation. Items that cannot be sold through traditional retail channels are repurposed, recycled, or repaired at the Goodwill Impact Centres in Edmonton and Calgary. These facilities serve as hubs for innovation, community engagement, and environmental action.
These programs promote a circular economy, reduce environmental footprints, and empower communities through sustainable and inclusive practices. Whether it’s a themed dresser, a modern desk, or a pet home crafted from salvaged wood, each piece tells a story of renewal and resilience.
